Hearing Aids – Advice from a Professional

Hi Folks,

Here is a follow-up to yesterdays post about my personal experience with hearing aids.

I talk to so many people that are really, really unhappy with their hearing aids. The chief causes for their not being pleased seem to be:

  • They did not shop around. They went to one vendor and that was it. No comparison shopping. No checking other audologist’s findings.
  • Their aids are uncomfortable but the audiologist says they will get used to them (but they never do).
  • They expected to hear as well as they did before they lost their hearing.
  • Repair costs and readjustments are too expensive.
  • They were high pressured into buying expensive aids.
  • They get tired of going back to the vendor for readjustments.
  • They did not learn about the different types of hearing aids available before they purchased a pair.
  • They did not read anything about hearing aids except advertisments before they went to the audiologist.

My first pair of hearing aids were very expensive. Looking back on it now I can’t believe I paid that much for them (almost $7,000.00) but frankly I was getting desperate. I was still employed and it was important in my job that I could hear well. My days were spent working with people and in meetings and it was getting more and more difficult to understand what people were saying.

Empty Nest Parents

Hi Folks,

Are you an empty nester? Or do you have a flock of full grown family birds living with you?

I have several friends that are of the “not-so-empty-nest parents group” and I’m not sure what their thoughts or opinions are about having their children (and grandchildren) moving back in with them. They don’t talk about it much. But I do wonder.
